WASHINGTON — Citing excessive partisanship and a dispiriting political environment, Senator Olympia J. Snowe, a three-term Republican from Maine, said Tuesday that she would not run for re-election in November.
She’s not going to seek re-election. Boo-frickety-hoo. She claims that she’s “frustrated by the partisanship.” Ya think?!
It took you long enough to figure it out, Senator.
Ever since President Obama was elected in November, 2008, you and your fellow Republicans have been doing everything in your power to undermine, to obstruct, to mislead, to cast unfair blame – hell, some of your fellow travelers (like Senator Chuck Grassley and others who ought to be ashamed of themselves) have even resorted to hemming and hawing when questioned about the outrageous lies and utter stupidities being routinely bounced around in the wingnut echo chamber that is FOX “News” – like death panels, the president’s Christianity – even his birth certificate.
Oh, yeah. We’ve got partisanship, all right.
Senator Snowe ought to get a good look at this “partisanship” from our perspective – you know? Us. The American people. While the Republican leaders like House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell are pandering to the Tea Party morons in the House and Senate and playing their stupid party games like “bash the President,” “block the appointment” and “filibuster everything,” the American people are suffering. Senator, we’re losing our homes, losing our jobs, losing our healthcare, and, every day, those lucky enough to still be employed are watching their wages go down while every day, we’re all paying more and more for essentials like groceries and gasoline. We’re being forced every day to make hard choices between going to the doctor or paying the rent. To buy our children shoes or buy groceries. We’re playing monthly games of 3 Card Monte with our bills – paying one here, skipping one there, paying a bit here, paying the minimum there – while we make humiliating phone calls to our creditors asking for just a little more time.
You want a “dispiriting environment”? I’ll tell you about a “dispiriting environment,” Senator Snowe.
Your fellow Republicans have been telling us that if we don’t have jobs, we’re lazy drug abusers who should be forced to pee in a cup and be drug-tested — and pay for the privilege, thank you very much! If we’re poor, well, it’s our own damned fault because we’re just lazy. They tell us, hell, if we just worked a little harder, we too could become “job creators” or corporate CEO’s and pay less taxes than the barrista who makes their morning latte! If we’re unemployed, we’re teat-suckers on vacation at the expense of the taxpayers. If we don’t have health insurance, well, dammit, we should go right out and buy it – even if the most basic coverage for someone like me (an unemployed 57 year old) costs $500 per month, which is way, way out of my price range and would be, even if I had a job in the first place.
And if you’re old, well, the Republicans will tell you that you don’t deserve your Social Security – even though you paid into it your whole life – or your Medicare. You see, all that money is cutting into the profits of the job creators and the Wall Street hedge fund managers. Yeah, they want to hand you a voucher and send you out to buy your own insurance from the greedheads who are currently in charge of what passes for “healthcare” in this country. (Good luck with that, Granny.)
Your fellow Republicans, Senator Snowe, cheered when a Republican candidate for president said during a debate that if someone didn’t have health insurance, well, they should just be allowed to die. They also cheered Governor Rick Perry’s body count: 236 executions in Texas, and the guv? Well, he sleeps like a baby.
You think that’s bad, Senator? Oh, there’s so much more where that came from!
Republicans telling us that if we’re Latino, we must be here illegally – and that every racist cop with a little time on his or her hands should be able to demand to see your papers. If you are here illegally, your children should not be allowed to go to school, and if you get hit by a car, well, you should just lie there and die in the street because you shouldn’t be able to get help in the emergency room – because, after all, you are a criminal, and you need to pay for that crime.
And lately, they’re telling us that if we’re women, we ought to march our pretty little selves right back into the kitchen and make our men a sandwich. Career? We don’t need no stinking career! Having babies and submitting to our men ought to be our highest aspiration. Rape? It’s our own fault because we asked for it. Abusive husband? We don’t need a divorce! No, the Bible tells us that we should think about why we married that dear man in the first place and be glad that he still loves us and is willing to take us back if we promise to behave. They tell us that we aren’t capable of making our own healthcare decisions. They’re telling us that we shouldn’t be allowed to control our fertility, that if we want to take the Pill, we’re “sluts” and “prostitutes.” They compare us to pigs, cattle and chickens. They are even telling us that we should be subjected to state-mandated rape with a transvaginal probe before we can make the most gut-wrenching decision a woman could ever make: terminating a pregnancy. I mean, after all, we were penetrated once before when we got pregnant, right? Eh – no big deal – what’s one more?
Of course, the article linked above soft-pedals Senator Snowe’s membership in the Republican Party by claiming that she has a history of “voting against her Republican colleagues almost as often as with them” – but I’m not buying it.
Maybe I’m being hardnosed, but I don’t believe that people should get a pat on the back for doing the right thing when it’s easy.
And that’s just what she and several other Republicans have done: they only speak out when they have nothing to lose. Time after time, I see Republicans on the teevee being introduced as “former Senator whozit,” “former Congressman whatshisface,” “former Republican whatthehellever” — and, only now, when they have no more skin in the game, they are the ONLY ones who are speaking up about the racist, bigoted, homophobic, mendacious, thieving bunch of monsters who are now running the Republican Party.
So, Senator Snowe, yeah: fuck you. You’re a coward. Rather than do the right thing when it’s difficult, you’re just running away.
Oh – one more thing: I don’t want to hear another fucking word from you about how “dispiriting” it is for you in the Senate. After all, when you retire, you’re going to have a big fat pension and a Cadillac health plan – hell, you’re going to be set up for life. You might even score a cushy job as a lobbyist, or make a paltry couple hundred thou a year in speaking fees. Yeah, it’s tough for you.
Don’t expect me to take up my tiny violin and play you a sad song.
